“Don’t be a fly on the wall, be the wall.”
The Gray Man Theory involves the intentional act of behaving in an inconspicuous manner in order to avoid any unwanted attention. Both defensive and offensive security missions have the same objective: work the environment, work the problem, and find a solution in an inconspicuous manner.
Industrial security solutions should strive to work in such a way as to not impede production — working in the background to protect a customer’s process from unintended behavior, and of course to protect their intellectual property.
Kwan Lee, Senior SYSTEMA Instructor, talks about the Gray Man Theory in his “Mastering FEAR” video. We recommend watching the entire clip for context, but around the 2:20 mark you’ll get a sense of what Kwan means as he speaks about the Gray Man Theory.
Bottom line: the Gray Man Theory is very applicable to the physical and cybersecurity arenas. We felt it represents the undertone and foundation of successful security implementations. And that’s why we’re called Gray Man Cyber.
